Catherine Galasso is a choreographer, director, and video artist based in San Francisco and New York City. She creates contemporary dance theater performances that are based on modern myth and idiosyncratic stories that reflect the zeitgeist of the moment. Catherine is committed to reaching a broad audience of dance enthusiasts and newcomers alike, and she does this by combining a cinematic aesthetic, humor, and irony with more abstract themes. Her recent works include:
“The Improbable Reign of Norton I” a 45-minute dancer theater piece about five historical San Francisco eccentrics (ODC May 2009), and “Show Me The Money” an evening-length performance installation for 6 dancers inside a former bank vault on Wall Street (LMCC Swing Space November 2009).
Catherine’s upbringing was characterized by her exposure to and practice of several different art forms: movement-theater, painting, music, and documentary film. She received a European Baccalaureate from the Art Institute in Venice, Italy, and graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, with a BA in Film. Catherine’s father, the acclaimed composer Michael Galasso, collaborated with leading avant-garde artists such as Robert Wilson, Lucinda Childs, Karole Armitage, and film director Wong Kar Wai, all of whom have been influential to Catherine’s work.
Since 2006, Catherine’s work has been presented at Danspace Project, Dance New Amsterdam, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Chen Dance Center, ODC Theater, CounterPULSE, SomArts, as well as the International Theater Festival in Pristina, Kosovo. Catherine is currently the youngest artist-in-residence at ODC Theater. She has also held residencies with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and the Atlantic Center for the Arts, as well as received funding from the Bossak-Heilbron and the Zellerbach Family Foundations. www.catherinegalasso.com
